Who Is GMHBA?

GMHBA Limited (Geelong Medical and Hospital Benefits Association) is a not-for-profit private health insurer founded in Geelong, Victoria. It is a member-owned organisation with no shareholders — surplus is reinvested into member benefits and kept competitive premiums. GMHBA has grown from a regionally-focused fund to a nationally operating insurer while retaining its member-owned identity.

GMHBA is also the parent organisation of Frank Health Insurance — nib's budget brand... actually, to clarify: Frank Health Insurance is owned by nib Group, not GMHBA. GMHBA is an independent not-for-profit. It's worth noting this distinction as the two are sometimes confused.

GMHBA's Strengths

Not-for-profit with Victorian roots
GMHBA's member-owned structure means no pressure to generate shareholder returns. Surplus is used to improve member benefits and keep premiums competitive — particularly strong incentive alignment for VIC-based members.
Competitive pricing
GMHBA consistently prices competitively across Bronze, Silver, and Gold tiers. For value-conscious members who want a not-for-profit alternative to Medibank or Bupa, GMHBA is frequently in the running.
Strong Victorian hospital network
GMHBA's Geelong and Victorian network relationships mean strong coverage for members in VIC — including Geelong, Ballarat, and Melbourne. All major Melbourne private hospitals are generally covered.
National coverage for mobile members
While VIC-centric by history, GMHBA has expanded hospital agreements nationally. Members who travel or move interstate can use their cover at major private hospitals in other states.

GMHBA's Limitations

Lower name recognition nationally
Outside VIC, GMHBA is less well-known than the Big Three. This doesn't affect coverage quality, but members unfamiliar with the fund may be cautious. GMHBA is APRA-regulated and financially stable — size isn't the measure of safety in the regulated Australian PHI market.
Network depth outside VIC varies
GMHBA's strongest hospital and specialist gap cover network is in Victoria. In NSW, QLD, or WA, the network is functional but may not have the depth of locally-based or larger national funds.

Who GMHBA Is Best Suited For

Victorian residents who want a not-for-profit alternative
For VIC members who want to avoid for-profit funds but also want competitive pricing, GMHBA is one of the most compelling options alongside Australian Unity.
Value-conscious members at any tier
GMHBA frequently competes on price at Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels. If you're comparing on a cost-per-benefit basis, GMHBA should be in your shortlist regardless of state.
Members requiring maximum national gap cover network
If finding participating gap cover specialists across multiple states is critical, the larger funds (Medibank, Bupa, HCF) may have wider national specialist participation.
Those primarily in WA
For WA residents, HBF has a significantly stronger WA-specific network. GMHBA covers WA but is not the natural first choice for Western Australians.
