Who Is HBF?

HBF Health Limited is a not-for-profit private health insurer headquartered in Perth, Western Australia. It is the largest health fund in WA by membership and one of Australia's significant regional not-for-profit funds. HBF has expanded nationally and now accepts members from all states and territories, though its hospital network and service relationships are strongest in Western Australia.

As a not-for-profit, HBF does not pay dividends to shareholders. Surplus is reinvested into member benefits, health programs, and competitive premiums. HBF also operates HBF Dental centres in WA.

HBF's Strengths

Strongest private hospital network in WA
For Western Australian members, HBF has the most comprehensive hospital agreement network in the state. Most Perth private hospitals and regional WA private facilities are included — giving WA members maximum hospital choice.
Not-for-profit with genuine WA focus
HBF reinvests surplus into member benefits. Unlike national funds, HBF's community investment is concentrated in WA — including HBF health clinics, community programs, and facilities.
HBF Dental in WA
HBF operates dental centres in WA where members can access no-gap or reduced-gap dental care within their extras limits. For regular dental users in Perth and major WA centres, this adds real value.
Competitive pricing for WA members
HBF consistently prices competitively for WA residents. As a WA-focused fund, there is less overhead supporting national marketing and infrastructure compared to big four funds.

HBF's Limitations

Network weaker outside WA
While HBF operates nationally, its hospital agreement network is considerably stronger in WA than in NSW, VIC, or QLD. Members who move interstate or travel frequently for medical care may find coverage less comprehensive than WA-based use.
Smaller scale than Big Three
HBF's scale (versus Medibank, Bupa, HCF) means fewer gap cover network specialists nationally. Outside WA, the specialist gap cover participation may be limited compared to larger funds.

Who HBF Is Best Suited For

Western Australian residents
HBF's strongest case is for WA residents. The combination of best-in-state hospital network, WA dental centres, not-for-profit structure, and competitive pricing makes HBF a natural top choice for most West Australians.
Those who value not-for-profit structure
HBF's surplus stays in Australia and is reinvested into member benefits and WA community programs — not distributed to shareholders.
Members who regularly move between states
If you split time between WA and east coast states, HBF's national network may be less comprehensive for east coast hospital episodes. Consider whether a nationally-focused fund serves your lifestyle better.
East coast residents (NSW, VIC, QLD)
HBF accepts members from all states, but its primary strength is in WA. East coast members may find that HCF, Medibank, or Bupa have stronger local network coverage for their area.
