Who Is Navy Health?

Navy Health is a not-for-profit restricted private health insurer with origins in the Royal Australian Navy. It has expanded eligibility over time and now covers ADF personnel across all three branches (Navy, Army, Air Force), ADF reserves, eligible defence civilians, and family members. It is a member-owned fund — no shareholders — with surplus reinvested into member benefits.

Navy Health operates nationally with hospital agreements across Australia, designed for a membership base that moves frequently with postings. The fund understands the nomadic nature of defence service and has structured its products accordingly.

Restricted Fund — ADF/Defence Eligibility

Navy Health requires ADF service, defence civilian employment, or eligible family connection. If you do not have a defence connection, Navy Health is not available — our agents can find the best open-market alternative for your needs.

Navy Health — Strengths and Limitations

Purpose-built for defence service life
Navy Health's products account for the realities of ADF service — frequent relocations, sea deployments, and remote postings. Cover is nationally portable by design, not as an afterthought.
Not-for-profit member value
As a restricted not-for-profit fund, Navy Health typically offers strong premium value compared to large commercial open funds. Without shareholder returns to factor in, pricing is competitive for equivalent cover.
Community ethos and member service
Navy Health members report a service experience consistent with a community-focused fund — a contrast to the transactional feel of large commercial insurers.
Eligibility requirement
Membership requires an ADF or defence connection. For members transitioning out of defence service, portability rules allow waiting periods to transfer to an equivalent open fund without re-serving them.

Defence Health vs Navy Health

Both Defence Health and Navy Health are not-for-profit restricted funds serving the ADF community. Eligible members sometimes ask which to choose. Key considerations:

Both are restricted
Both require ADF/defence eligibility. If you are eligible for one, you are likely eligible for both — compare products and premiums directly.
Naval focus vs multi-service
Navy Health has deep roots in RAN service culture. Defence Health has historically been broader-based across all three services. Both are now open to all ADF branches.
Compare the same tier
Compare Hospital Gold + Extras across both for your family situation. Premium, included services, and annual limits vary between products — the right choice depends on your specific health needs.
