Heading overseas? Make sure you're covered.
Medicare provides no coverage outside Australia. Our partner specialists can help you find appropriate overseas health cover for working holidays, extended travel, study abroad or long-term living overseas.

What's the purpose of your travel?
What you need to know.
Medicare does not cover you overseas
Australian Medicare provides no coverage outside of Australia (except under limited reciprocal arrangements with a small number of countries). A single emergency hospitalisation in a country like the USA can cost over $100,000 AUD. A medical evacuation back to Australia can cost $50,000 or more. Overseas health insurance ensures you can access treatment without catastrophic out-of-pocket costs.
What overseas health insurance covers
Overseas health insurance typically covers hospitalisation and emergency medical treatment, specialist consultations, and sometimes dental and allied health. It is distinct from travel insurance, which focuses on cancellation, luggage and delays. Dedicated overseas health insurance provides more comprehensive ongoing medical coverage — particularly suited to long stays, working holidays and expats.
Visa requirements and working holiday cover
Some Australian visas (particularly student and certain working visas) require proof of adequate health insurance. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is required for international students studying in Australia. Overseas Visitor Health Cover (OVHC) is designed for temporary visa holders in Australia. For Australians heading overseas, an expat health or dedicated overseas health policy is the appropriate product.
