About Travel Insurance

What you need to know.

✈️

Why travel insurance matters

Australian Medicare provides no coverage outside Australia (except under limited reciprocal arrangements). A single emergency hospitalisation in the United States can cost over $100,000 AUD. A medical evacuation home can exceed $100,000. The cost of travel insurance is a small fraction of these potential expenses.

🛡️

What travel insurance typically covers

Standard travel insurance covers: overseas emergency medical expenses and hospitalisation, trip cancellation and amendment costs (e.g. if you fall ill before departure), lost or stolen luggage and personal effects, travel delays, and personal liability. Policies vary — always read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) before purchasing.

⚠️

Common exclusions to be aware of

Most policies exclude: incidents related to undisclosed pre-existing medical conditions, events related to alcohol or drug use, extreme or adventure sports activities (unless specifically added to the policy), and travel to destinations under a DFAT "Do Not Travel" advisory. Always check the PDS for specific exclusion terms.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Yes. Failure to disclose pre-existing conditions when applying for travel insurance can result in claims being denied. Most insurers will assess the condition and either cover it (sometimes with an additional premium), exclude it, or decline to offer cover. Always disclose accurately.
If you travel more than twice a year, annual multi-trip insurance is usually better value. It covers all trips within a 12-month period up to a maximum trip duration (typically 45–90 days per trip). For infrequent travellers, a single-trip policy is usually sufficient.
Ideally at the time you book your trip, not the day before you depart. Cancellation cover only applies from the date you purchase the policy — buying early protects you against needing to cancel before departure due to illness, bereavement or other covered events.
Coverage varies significantly by insurer and policy. Many policies now include COVID-19-related medical expenses if you contract COVID overseas. However, cancellation coverage due to COVID is less consistent. Always check the PDS for specific COVID-19 terms before purchasing.
